What's the difference between SRT and VTT?

SRT is the older, plain-text subtitle format. WebVTT (VTT) is the W3C standard used by HTML5 <track>, supports styling, positioning, and metadata, and is required for most modern video players.

Does this convert the file in my browser?

Yes. We never upload your subtitle file. Conversion happens client-side via JavaScript so it works offline once the page loads.

Will styling and formatting be preserved?

Bold, italic, and underline tags carry over. Custom colors and positioning hints are preserved when the source SRT contains them.

Can I convert VTT back to SRT?

Yes — toggle the direction switch at the top of the tool. Round-trip conversion is lossless for plain captions.

What encoding does the output use?

UTF-8 with BOM, which works in every modern player and platform including YouTube, Vimeo, and JW Player.

SRT is single-track by design; we output one VTT per upload. Use a separate workflow for SAMI or TTML.

How big a file can I convert?

There is no enforced cap, but for files over 5 MB conversion runs in a Web Worker so the UI stays responsive.

Are timestamps adjusted?

SRT uses comma decimals (00:00:01,500) and VTT uses dot decimals (00:00:01.500). We rewrite the separators automatically.
